Yay! I went to Commix last night at Fu, and now . . . it’s the next day!
Pretty sweet gig. It was way way packed though, and in the worst kind of way – I mean, sure, I expected there to be lots of people and lots of scene kids, but I didn’t expect the crowd to be so rabid.
I rocked in with perfect timing, just as Commix were jumping on, so I headed straight across the front.
Some chick jumped in front of me squealing “Sorry, but I LOVE Commix”.
Hey that’s all good, girl. Go for it. Then she starts squealing and flailing her limbs and whipping her fucking pony tail in my face. Y’know?
After a couple of minutes of this I’m thinking, great, I tried to be the good guy about it, now I’m the one stuck behind the crazy squealing drunk chick who doesn’t know any fucking dancefloor etiquette.
And this is real. When you’re in with a group of people who know what drum’n bass gigs are about, it doesn’t matter how packed it is, you don’t get bumped. That’s the vibe.
From now on, I don’t think I’ll make any excuse for it unless the person is clearly wasted. I’ll just tell them straight. Look if you don’t know how to control yourself, then take yourself out of the fucking equation. Don’t ruin my buzz because you’re not showing any consideration that we’re all here trying to enjoy the gig.
There isn’t a lot of consideration shown, but I’ll get back to that.
Because after this, standing behind this crazy chick for a couple of minutes, I jumped in front of her. You had your chance. But then she goes all rabid and starts grabbing me and clawing at me and hitting me in the face.
“This is MY spot. You TOOK my spot . . . I LOVE COMMIX!!!!”
I couldn’t fucking believe it. Once she started pawing me in the face and her friends were trying to pull her away from me I was like . . . fuck this.
When I woke up this morning I realised the last thing I wanted was to stand over some chick on the dancefloor, so by letting her have her place back, I did the right thing. She of course became terribly apologetic and tried to explain again, how she “loved Commix” and I was like . . . I had to repeat 3 times:
“. . . ok, sure, just enjoy the show and don’t hit me . . . in the face!”
Big guys also have a lot to answer for, but just as long as they can control themselves then that’s cool. Guys like me don’t take up much space.
But yeah, great night otherwise, they started off running thorugh a lot of the big tunes from the last year or so, a fairly typical subdued start before rolling into the business. Lots of rolling minimal tunes which were to be expected but also a lot of fairly solid liquid cuts, there was about as much liquid as there were more experimental kinda dat music style tunes such as “underwater scene”.
Speaking of scene, I am taking a good look at it. Obviously there’s a lot to be said about this, I shouldn’t be cute and pretend like it’s only just popped into my head.
After the gig, the Commix lads were very popular with the ladies, I really hadn’t seen a visiting act get the full on gush like they did, but then they did make themselves available by hanging around outside the club.
I should have been smart enough to pick how big people are on Commix.
But yeah I’m not exactly mr. popular but I really try not to be combatative or take on this persecution complex, because that ain’t putting out no “positive vibes”. That’s not making an effort to contribute to the scene.
I try not to be so sensitive to what is basic human nature, especially in Drum and Bass where most of the kids in the scene now are younger than me, but I get pretty disappointed. It’s nothing I don’t expect, but it’s still disappointing.
If you’re busy, if you’re distracted, if you’re just on your own vibe, then thats cool, i’m cool with that. I’m always at the gigs, you’re always at the gigs, we know each other, I know you’re there, it’s not a big deal. It’s a club. It’s loud, I accept that.
But I think – man, if you seriously don’t want to make the effort to even acknowledge me because you have some problem with my DJing or my music or my gigs . . .
That’s bullshit. You’re a fuckin scene vampire and you suck.
Let’s talk more about it some other night.
But it was a great night of music, was really into the vibe. I wouldn’t put it up there with Alix Perez & Lynx even though the fu was even more packed for this one, it was full on, I was never even able to get back up front.
A-Sides coming up tomorrow night @ Fu!!! I’m playing 12-1!! $15 only!!
