Romantech Archives the Maze in A Sentence

by Matt Romantech on August 28, 2009

So the design of my new site – it’s gotta be theoretical.

It’s got to be designed thoughtfully.

What I’m working on is an archive which is kind of a database of all my work running along a number of threads – as i said in the last post, it’s about me doing my art and sorting it all out, but it’s also an essential back story – the past in context of what exists in the narrative present.

yeah I know, I’m going off with all these ideas but y’know pretend I’m the character.

If I was REALLY that charcter, that archive would be the only evidence I existed! Maybe a hard concept to grasp but basically: in the context of my character, I have been making beats and been in bands etc. for almost 13 years, over 9 making beats, the archive represents that.

yes fans may check it out, cool. Maybe my great grandkids I’ll never meet will check it out. I dunno. It’s my art, I can just toss it, I guess this is a long term project to use the benefit of hindsight to better look forward.

It’s also about being a serious artist, which i’m into now, like painters, their work is just a result of their journey in life and the growth of their mind, I’m getting like that, I know each song I write is pulsing toward new concepts, especially recently with the whole minimal thing making me think about different goals in my music making again aside from “rocking dancefloors” because I don’t know if that’s what I’ll be into in 10 years from now.

but anyway. Sheesh. A lot of justification for the need to look back huh?

but in terms of practical elements:

Basically you’ll have a chronological archive related to each year 2002-2009 plus maybe some separate bits for whatever comes before that, and each page will then link to corresponding songs and projects.

So you can click on 2005 and it will have a little blurb on what I did and links to all the content from 2005.

Then I will also have a project archive which links to a page for each project, and each project will be figured out at a time.

For example, Soul Science and Reality Compound might just have a little blurb, some links and then a pesentation or button going through to the official site.

The Data:bass site I kind of want to curate like an exhibit. You can still visit the data:bass site and I will keep it pretty much the same as it was, you can still get to it independently through www.databass.tk for example, and I might make a new intro and um have other notes on my site.

But i gues there will be other categories – mixes, releases, projects that will link them together because I will include every project I did and of course each year will link to each project I was active in.

Also at the bottom of the page I will have a complete list of downloads available in chronological order and a calender of every gig I can confirm I played.

Thorough enough for a little wee archive? Deep enough to provide those curious enough with enough material to lead them deep into my maze?

I guess it’s all about being reductive also. Like how can I begin to say “I’ve been doing this for 10 years” in 5 seconds, in 1 sentence?
