Don’t Poo Poo The Dojo Inspectors or Pirates

by Matt Romantech on September 20, 2009

So yeah time for a blog. I know now I only write the damn things to sort my own head out.

But why not make some ad revenue in the meantime? Yeah those ads down the side make money so feel free to click on any that take your fancy.

Of course if you’re interested in how to make money from music using things such as advertising and general online marketing type stuff you can read my music marketing blog, but for the meantime here, you’re stuck with me talking about my own music and generally whining about the fact that life doesn’t come hand delivered perfectly how you want it in a little bow.

And I’m stuck at home finishing the songs this mixtape. I hate it when I have to do something, or not. Y’know, at least I have an excuse not to go out and have a good time.

Because that’s how things get done.

So we did the photoshoot, and I was like, man, is this gonna be any good?

Have I talked about the Dojo Inspectors yet, the themes? Oh well I won’t mention that now, it’s coming up.

Forget the photoshoot, is the damn album gonna be any good?

The aim isn’t big, it’s just about having an official thing out that people can listen to, to say, “this is what we done.”

I think I was talking about it before.  Gotta have something to show. But people are gonna judge, and that makes me want it to be good and not no good.

That’s what I realised after the photoshoot, this is real and if I want to make a song and dance – literally – about how it’s all a proper album and it’s all a big deal then people are going to be poo-pooing. That’s the way it is on the scene. You just don’t want everyone to be poo-pooing your ratty piece of rubbish that no one cares about anyway because it’s no good.

If people are going to be poo-pooing you may as well make it good, so then it doesn’t really matter what people think. I guess I’ve learnt that much.

I mean not SO good that it’s beyond your reasonable expectation to reach, but there’s no good just mucking round and not striving to produce something decent.

But I did end up getting into doing some work this weekend because the release is coming up and it’s always more work than you think it will be. There is, as again I probably mentioned, lots of boring build ups and drum edits to get through to finish off all the songs and that is the main job.

A drum edit or FX build is just that little detail that makes all the difference. It’s so hard to imagine how much a song changes when all you’re doing is adding a little accentuation every 8 or 16 bars but it really translates in terms of the story of the groove.

It’s like a descriptive passage in a book makes all the difference to a story – you could still tell the same story – and indeed the story is what people will notice and talk about – but it wouldn’t have the same memorable character without the tiny flourishes of detail and

I had pirate birthday party affairs to attend to this weekend also so I had plenty of excuses for leading an essentially boring and unfulfilled existance as a drum and bass producer and children’s entertainer.

Though I am excited about doing more pirate stuff. No, no what I mean is it seems not only like a sweet way to make cash, but I’m sure I can work out how to make more cash out of it.

There’s something purposeful about cash and business, although I accept I’ve probably gone too far, I guess it’s when you discover you’re good at something, it’s easy just to keep doing it rather than focus on areas where you may need to improve but prove more of a challenge.

Well I guess I’ll learn eventually. Well, I mean, I hope so. In the meantime I’m in my bedroom finishing the Dojo Inspectors mix, or in somebodies backyard running round with their kids dressed as a pirate.
