Now look I was meant to be talking about
This anime series I first saw a few years back. It’s so awesome.
I love the genre mashing between real american style family/high school drama with all these japanese style sexual overtones and then how it just flips over into crazy ass sci fi with robots climbing out of characters heads.
I love the way it moves so quickly and turns over ideas, awesome dialogue and crazy snappy sequences where things almost happen to quickly for you to take in.
It’s about this kid and he’s got this attitude which makes him pretty cool and then there’s the chick who’s like some alien and cruises round with a bass guitar on her scooter saving the day, while the kid is always having crazy things come out of his head which attack the city and cause destruction.
There’s also the bigger themes about childhood and adulthood and seeing the world and behaving like an adult.
How could I use those ideas?
But man the internet is awesome
Not only do I have this blog which means from time to time I actually can break out and post something that isn’t a self indulgent rant about why being perfect is just so hard these days, but you can also dig out all this content from back in my past which was just awesome.

Smokin a blunt is one of my favourite jungle anthems ever:
“Remember when we used to chill back when . . . smokin a blunt . . . and sippin on a heineken . . . “
I could remember then, and I still remember now, the way I used to chase the ideal, that I constructed this idea that many people have, of good times and friends and having a beer.
And it’s real but then it’s not. Then it’s over and everyone’s gone. And so many were willing to just milk it for whatever gratification that was available to them at the time – they weren’t looking forward or back, they had little regards for others except for where it suited them. Oh well.
I hark back to this when suddenly I start talking about free parties and building a scene and that nonsense. It’s nice to have good intentions, but then you know what they say.
Any way. Narratives and Fooly Cooly?
- I love the genre mashing and twists, I can play the frustrated marketer but I have to bring up or subtly reference wild undertones such as the TIger Penis and various vendettas and subplots etc.
- It’s also animated so again makes me think about how we can use animation from overseas to augment presentations.
- it’s like ricky gervais says, small episodes are able to be driven by characters. Strong characters are key.
- the obvious one is to create that counterpoint between goofy comedy and other dramatic elements
- but just the japanese thing with the spacing yknow from serene to crazy the master it – not just timing but space within the frame
- the visual tricks of anime – sliding movement over stills but also fast paced animation which would be harder to pull off unless it was some repetitive loop.
