So yeah my blog has gone all meaningfulcore now since the other night I managed to blog myself into a state where I actually believed a whole bunch of nonsense about inner growth being more important than cash.

Didn’t last long, the next day I was a mess again, but the point is, only being a little short of cash is stopping me moving on with my art, which is just an excuse really.

3 months ago I thought I was doing fine, but I was still sitting around not pushing it. Where was the urgency, the vitality, the fundamentalism?

Why the hell even do art if it’s not important? Well exactly. Part of art is life, and my life is my business and sometimes business doesn’t go well and life is hard, and that’s what art is all about, right?

I am excited about all the sketches I’ve put down for the new project “Microscope”. And it’s time to begin incubating, but at the same time, Dojo inspectors is finally readying to hatch.

Another part of the microscope concept is that it obscures the bigger picture and really both these projects are designed to occupy people while we continue to develop.

The idea is that Dojo Inspectors will be a distraction that will be carried on in a refined way by Microscope, but the point is to feed the dogs while perfecting our skills.

It says we can release music. We do release music. We are about actually having music we have done to share. We don’t think we’ve reached our full potential but people can still hear 2 projects that we have developed to showcase our music.

So where the work on microscope is in composition and engineering, I have to get my promo on for Dojo Inspectors after not even wanting to think about it for 3 months, and lets not forget, I’m not exactly flush right now.

Same trip through, the promotion that has to be done for dojo inspectors is about working through, here’s my old list I had:

So that leaves the following list:

- write up for landing pages

- performance pages

- buttons and design for downloadable content

- integration with facebook, twitter etc.

- archives set up with relative galleries and content

set up of primary music content for presentation and distribution

final redesign for presentation

writing jobs = landing page / bio / performance / archive stuff

yeah that sounds like a plan for developing a website – doesn’t really say much about how we’re going to reach out to people who need the dojo inspectors.

Okay so the mix will be finished, it’ll go up, and it’ll go out on CD to the local massive, then our job is to target certain audiences more precisely using direct content, and online marketing stuff.

Most importantly we will have the content, the full mix to create leverage, all roads leading toward the download of the mix and maybe individual singles as an extra carrot.

So month after month we can continue pushing dojo inspectors until we’re sure that Microscope is ready to be deployed, in the same fashion, pushing both mixes – the rough gem debut and the refined more experimental follow up – to be concdluded by a blockbusting powershot come november with a new chapter that sets a new standard in what we’re doing.

For now, make sure the Dojo Inspectors mix is tight, make the CD’s, get rid of them, make more, and start thinking harder aboutwho is going to use that mix or songs off it to push it out to more fans, pick up emails, connections, push out, ready to drop something real at the end of this year.

Keen to hear me DJing some sweet drum and bass?

It’s a mix of big party choons, a few tougher numbers and my typical smooth liquid funk.

http://dnbshare.com/download/TOUGHLOVE-DJROMANTECHdjmxDec09-320.MP3.html

It’s the official “Tough Love” mix.

OH WAIT YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT MY MARKETING MUSIC SERVICES – THIS IS MY ACTUAL MUSIC, I MAKE – NOT MY JOB, FOLLOW THE LINK

Mmm so yeah I’m thinking of kicking off my newsletter and not giving a toss. Why not. It’s a good idea to have a newsletter you can make money flogging junk and stuff, i’m kind of good at that.

I guess I’m thinking who would want to read it? I don’t know, why not try it out?

The main idea is also a small step toward video.

It’s just been so hard, I’ve been trying to do this for years now! I’ve got to break this mutha down. If I can start with one newsletter per month, I can then move toward a newsletter and a video per month, plus a free song, and well, we’re good. We’ve got our format.

How hard can that be? The thing I like about it is unlike video, with an automated newsletter you can go back and improve the newsletter, which kind of makes me think of it as the top rung of engagement, in fact if it only ends up being a couple of hundred people and less than half of those even read the thing then that’s fine by me.

But I’m embracing the small step because I hate having a goal and missing it and then ending up discussing it and overanalysing it to beyond meaning, and we don’t want that on the newsletter. The newsletter can be actual me trying to do some decent writing and putting together something decent, and even if I don’t – as I say, unlike a youtube video I can just go back and change it.

No problems. Wait no, lets be serious. If I make it too crazy and all Reality Compound then it might put people who are into serious drum and bass or serious marketing off but if it’s too serious it’ll be boring.

I think I might of been saying it’s all about framing. Do the reality compound stuff but in such a way that drum and bass and marketing people can enjoy. Try to keep it edgy and amusing without offending the mainstream. Do marketing, but make it interesting, relevant. Show off your music, video and other content, but be real, not all indulgent.

Really aim to give people something decent

Use the story, use philosophy, because y’know, this is really all about the ideas I had since I was a young kid that I would be an author one day. Now it’s author 2.0, it’s author of my own destiny.

It’s author as character in their own story it’s an author combining the different media – video, newsletters and blogs, music to tell a story in a new way.

The whole RC dynamic of being a “real character”, which is not really me but a caricature of myself.

Another problem is about the idea of keeping it real vs. trying to not offend anyone and ending up a pussy who can’t say anything that’s real becuase it might offend someone.

I want to be transparent, but isn’t it so burdensome from an entertaining perspective to have to explain and justify everything? If I want to sell penis enlargement on my newsletter because it’s rock and roll and I don’t care, do I really have to explain it and justify it to my readers?

Do I just not sell penis enlargements at all and avoid the problem? Do I only do things I can justify in a sentence?

I just have to come up with a way of working with that content that my audience will accept.

Or that I feel . . . well I think I will have to shave off some raw edges. I think if I decide to promote penis enlargement I better be bloody clever about it.

Play the character of myself. The character of myself would sell penis enlargements on his blog because I’m crazy and he would do that.

The newsletter is a new level ofcloseness to the “fan” – I think I really just have to try it, basically, become my own client.

I think the newsletter is a better goal long term anyway, I mean so what if I can use youtube and be hilarious and irreverent and tell a story that I actually live in, what’s the next step? I become a more dynamic individual to play to the audience? I get a segment on tv? I get together with darcy and work on scripts and shoots?

Isn’t that all a bit typically far reaching? Why don’t I send them to my newsletter so you can maybe build up 150 people who give a shit and buy something once in a blue moon simply because there’s something I’m doing they like. Maybe they don’t like the music, or the marketing stuff, don’t care what I think or they dont think i’m funny or my philosphies are very incisive. As long as they have some reason to read it, i’ll keep reviewing what i’m doing until it’s as good as i can do.

How can I meet the objectives without a list? Something I can work with, improve, make money with as well as work on the detailed process of reconciling my music, my business and my new creative directions.

What if it becomes a bummer like this blog, instead of being cool and awesome, just becomes a depressing testament to how belaboured the whole creative existance has become?

I think that means I need to change up my style. I can ramble on here on my blog, I might still continue to spew words onto the page and send them off for backlink building, ramble on generally, but my newsletter is where I put together episodes that are actually relevant and attempt to tackle the broad range that is my platform.

That’s the whole challenge of a new kind of narrative.

There are some people who will put up with information when they want entertainment and some people who will put up with my attempts to amuse. . . yeah nah, but here are some drafts I’m working on:

But first . . . why not sign up and try it out?

FIRST DRAFT NEWSLETTER: INTRO

Hi it’s Matt here, I’m doing this newsletter.

It is a story, but there’s promotion and creative tips, music to download, and deals on offer.

So even if you don’t like learning about promoting stuff online or not interested in getting music, or videos, or stuff I think is cool, insider deals from my business, kurb, or any of what I’m into, at least it might an interesting story.

Having a newsletter for your project is a great way of building up a group of people you can reach out to but people will tune out if your newsletters aren’t any good. That’s why I want to make all my newsletters super hot – snappy with lots of good material – promotion tips, free music to download, hot hot links, new videos, tears, laughter, and great deals.

What I’m doing here is pretty broad, so it won’t be valuable for everyone, but the people I’m left with will be valuable to me, valuable connections, valuable community.

hopefully

Part of the reason a newsletter is so effective as a money making tool is the ability to make offers that generate generous commissions. I’m not here to persuade you to buy something you don’t need, but to make you aware that these offers do allow me to make generous commissions on sales and whatever I can do to help you to support me by purchasing any of these digital products I’m happy to consider.

That’s why as well as advice, tips, free downloads of content I’ll also be offering special “insider” deals – ways for you get free stuff, but mainly I’m here to write my newsletter, push my content other content I think is exceptional or provocative, if we make a deal and I sell some junk and get paid, well that’s a bonus.

DRAFT CHAPTER ONE, TAKE 2

Internet Money Internet Fame

I had a little taste on the tip of my tongue of internet fame and it was good. I miss the myspace days. But I was broke, it wasn’t real.

But the stuff I learned while messing around on myspace refined my knowledge of internet marketing, because it worked. When something works once, it will often work again and again and it did and I learned reasonably fast.

If your content is poor than you’re not able to be trusted. High quality content embues trust. In my case, I can write well, it makes people trust me.

see this is the second take. on the first take, I got too far into an indulgent narrative. I always tell myself to get to the point of the narrative, which opens the door for information of value to come through. I just need to build the steps, create a clear trail for my audience to follow.

They see a video or whatever and end up on the list,

but I really like the idea of burying the information of value into the narrative.

That’s where I see philosophy coming in, just like any narrative.

Setting/framing, plot/narrative, music, video, alternative content and media . . . conclusion, information, resolution in 500 words, far less than whats here. Snappy.

DRAFT CHAPTER ONE, TAKE 1

At 18 I’d probably read to many modern classics for my own good, my beatnik road movie only got me as far as a job packing kiwifruit on minimum wage, I stood there at the assembly line enduring the monotony in my mind, and once in a while in a tiny moment, I felt something that was about more than me just standing there doing some job.

Well I always got good marks in school but I didn’t do much that was smart after that, 5 years later I was still an idiot. I thought I could be a club promoter. I learnt to build sites in dreamweaver, a bit of SEO, adsense, but anyway, I was broke by then. But myspace changed everything. For the first year I just hung out.

Then I started to do this thing called Reality Compound and the timing was perfect, it was outrageous and took off amongst the local kids. Then I got one of those friend adder bots. Pretty soon I was doing pretty well.

I don’t even really know whats going on with this so called update.

It’s probably not a big deal that i didn’t update for almost 3 weeks, but I did do a whole lot of writing offline, because of my new idea of just writing and using it for marketing and maybe posting whatever I liked here so that didn’t make me seem like I was constantly under strain, when y’know – I’m just sorting out my affairs. I’m very thorough.

Except, as it turns out, where I’ve just got ideas and postings all flying and I don’t know what’s going on.

I’m not sure it matters that much. One day I’ll sort it all out if it actually seems like anything of consequence is happening.

It’s not very interesting though, it’s just endless garble. I need to take that positive step of writing interestingly.

At the moment I’m truly just dialling it in and letting things in my mind ooze out without really addressing them with any kind of commitment.

But there are always lots of ideas and you should think about them, they could be good for getting things you want. Y’know. It’s like as I progress it becomes harder to breakthrough and have new ideas, so there needs to be more thinking and more writing.

It’s all about the next step, the transition, the progress, the development, and right now the choice for me seem to be actually move forward or not. I need to take me art to a more serious place knowing that for me and my businesses, money is good, but I need to seek more artistic purity away from scenic nonsense, in the hope that I will draw the motivation I need to see me through to doing my own thing, my own way.

So what’s my own thing? Doing my tunes in a focused way, producing every week, pushing regular good stuff through my site, and building fans, building relationships and building up my thing until they do ask me to play gigs again, or filming video becomes the new axis driving forward performance and gigging.

Anyway.

No fossicking about. What have we learned? First, I give up on the gig scene game. For now. It’s hard to say it, but I got better chances and more game in other arenas and I’m not closing any doors, but I certainly won’t be kicking any in when it comes to the auckland gig scene.

Because I’m sweet for cash I just want to get into my own art scene not some other thing where I’m not involved, and it’s all a big drag. I have to get the motivation to get on with the video of my art and all that.

Music, Video, Website.

DOJO INSPECTORS – THE OFFICIAL FULL LENGTH 30 TRACK MIXTAPE SAMPLER FROM SOUL SCIENCE AVAILABLE . . . AT SOME STAGE . . . SOON . . . I PROMISE

See that’s the kind of guy I am, I whinge about the spirits of dead dojo inspectors calling my name from the grave, when really I should be blogging about how ye blessed gods bestowed upon me the gift of treasures beyond value, my history, my past, my experience, my reality . . . but not my ability to pad things out dramatically, they couldn’t take that away in the first place!

Anyway, i got my hard drive back and I’ve pretty much got all my old songs back, 06 to early 08, Which is really great news there were 3 songs on there I really wanted to include on the Dojo Inspectors mix to provide teh comprehensive Soul Science experience, but yeah not to mention like maybe 100 other decent songs and all sorts of ancient goodies.

But that kind of brings me round to another related subject, that since I’m going mad haunted by dojo demons, and John is procrastinating over engineering 30 songs which I won’t quit worrying about and fussing coming to bare on due to my general anxious doubting nature.

That subject being the archiving process, which I was very committed to, establishing some basic accounts of what I was doing and the music I made when and why just because I guess . . . well at first it was the same as this dojo inspectors I could barely make sense of what I’ve already done which doesn’t help in trying to perceive what I’m getting at.

Sorting it out would be good, but also I feel for posterity, because when I’m dead, and even when I’m old, I want random characters to be able to come to my site and see that in 2003 I was doing this and that with these dudes and this was the music I made that you can download and these were the events and stuff that effected my work and what I ended up doing.

So yeah, archiving I’d like to do some because it does get harder as you get older, you turn around and 5 years has gone by and you forgot about that thing, and you can no longer get a copy of this thing, and . . . but . . . gosh if only you had known in advance it would be real sweet for my archive when I’m 60 and talking to people about my life.

That was my life. I didn’t want to go crazy, I wanted to express my thoughts and idas and memories in creative ways and then well I discovered deep down that being poor was not really right for me either so there was art and business and that’s what my archive is all about, looking back with resolve, and turning to the future.

Vut I also feel strongly that in teh words of Kenny Rogers “There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’ is done”

Listen to me going all out on the archiving when I haven’t even produced a significant work which of course was the intention of dojo inspectors, to simply be a significant work in my catalogue. 30 tune mix.

THIRTY TUNES.

Now where the hell are they?

Well it’s like this.

Singles come out first. Or maybe no because that might be too humiliating, maybe just go head on into promoting the mix, but I guess one way or the other we need to make singles available.

Maybe not the 4 track disc we originally planned but just a disc with as many of the different singles on it we want to make available for DJ use.

Website needs to be brought up to some kind of standard for real. It needs to come up to the standard where I can promote through my wonderful marketingz, but also it’s got to be a good site to want to check out.

I suppose a small media push would be worthwhile, just to see how it goes.

The final step is the production of 1000 CD’s for distribution, that’s where trademe or any other gimmicky stuff we’d want to do would come in.

What else is there? Nothing else really. I just keep doing my little online marketings, everyone who can and should will have a cd and you never know we might have a tiny little bit more recognition and a tiny little bit more respect for actually getting it done and having people here the damn thing.

DOJO INSPECTORS – THE OFFICIAL FULL LENGTH 30 TRACK MIXTAPE SAMPLER FROM SOUL SCIENCE AVAILABLE . . . AT SOME STAGE . . . SOON . . . I PROMISE

Unimaginable pain and sacrifice went into having this mix ready to give away on the date of the release party. After destroying a laptop screen, melting the hard drive on my main unit and discovering back up box had absolutely no sound capabilities, we were able to record into the laptop by using the screen in 1 sexond bursts to create this recording.

Once we have regrouped our hardware we will continue toward making the full 30 track Dojo Inspectors release available asap.

Call it therapy. I should be in therapy.

Man all my posters for the upcoming gig got taken down off K rd and suddenly I didn’t feel like such a tough guy. I got so much on.

This week has been a hard one. I need an early night. What was I going to say? Don’t jinx it. Have hope.

We have some gigs coming up and I really want to step it up. But I don’t seem to be stepping up jack. It’s somewhat concerning, I just wonder if I’m ready for the big bow out. Maybe I am.

Lord knows I’ve failed in many ways in many areas, but none so great as Drum’n Bass. And that’s what makes me grow weary. I’m sick of failing in music just when I’ve got to the point where my business is starting to dominate. I hate the anxious feelings music gets me when in business I go from strength to strength.

The prize in music, the fleeting respect of a bunch of guys for the brief time in which we face each other. Money’s not all that great either with it’s own little issues but hey, y’can’t really complain you’ve got too much money.

I dunno, I feel at times that business is pointless, it’s lead down the wrong path to a place where I have money and not much else and I’m losing touch with what it means to have creativity and artistry as a central force in my life, but now I think again, business has never left me disappointed, downcast and wracked with nerves like my music has, and I’ve only been in business half as long as music.

Business comes naturally, music doesn’t. That’s the challenge.

Sometimes with music I can’t help but wonder if I just do it because it’s something I’ve always done or wether I still truly care. I know I care about the value of artistry and the importance of creativity in providing some kind of feedback loop that bring meaning to your existance, but is that drum and bass?

Is drum and bass just a scarecrow, a spectre, a demon of my past failures I long to stare down?

I feel like I want to be free of the whole damn thing. The first proper come back gig is tomorrow and I’m still thoroughly rusty, I just can’t bring myself to care right now. I’ve got other shit going on, it seem so pointless to be worried about a gig, when the benefits of these other endeavours succeeding are significant whereas what does it matter how the gig goes tomorrow?

Whether a lot of people turn up or I play a fucking miserable set what does it matter? Y’knowm the out comes a re really inconsequential, but I guess it does come abck to that thing that y’know, if you’re going to do something half arsed then whydo it at all?

It doesn’t mean I’ll stop being creative, it just means I’ll have to find something more natural to channel it into. The club isn’t my natural environment anyway, I’ve considered that enough times, it’s not that I don’t enjoy it, it’s just not a place that favours the conditions that allow me to thrive, and of course y’know I’m getting all on this . . . what am I getting on again?

I dunno, I want to do my youtube stuff. I don;t want to stop DJing, but if the only reason I’m still pursuing all this nonsense is just because of some perceived failure from my past . . . I dunno the drum and bass scene seems like fighting over so many crumbs. I see the faces of all the young pricks involved, and how they’re just stupid think young dickjeads.

Yeah I’m getting on the nu underground vibe. That’s where I’m at. If it’s not too late I’d rather do somerthing worthwhile.

There’s this party going on called “Shift” which apparently has an “illegal underground rave” room. How ridiculous. That was kind of a sign to me that this needs to be sorted. There’s an issue to be addressed. When kids who don’t even understand the concept of an illegal underground rave are celebrating it, I kind of figure this needs to be dug up again.

Any way. I am almost rebelliously stating I am not going to do jack about this gig tomorrow, I’ve got other things to worry about. My business which is making sweet money

Y’know, life should be natural. It’s natural to lay about and be

But I cast my mind back to all the nervous times I prepared for so many gigs and where are those gigs now? Who talks about the fact I used to be such a bad DJ? Who talks about the passion that drove me to continue to do these drum and bass gigs, who even recognises that the kids at these gigs have changed, that it used to be about something, now it’s . . . I don;t know, I’m not picking on drum and bass,m I was at the mall today, and I just wonder what the hell is going on.

The mianstream has devoured the counterculture whole, kids used to turn to the counter culture to give them inspiration

I just wanna do my youtube, I wanna do my youtube about my business, and the fact that sometimes I’ve made music and sometimes I’ve put on parties and it hasn;t always gone that great but hey, here I am, and I am talking about the legend of the powdered tiger penis and about the thing I won’t mention yet on this blog because I don;t want to jinx it.

Thos are places, those are things I mean, that create meaning for me, Drum and Bass is like looking onto a pit of disappointment, with dead guys I used to know down in there, dead, drowned and decayed.

I don’t want to be dragged along with this nonsense any longer if that’s the way it has to be, god damn young kids with their arrogant ideas and pose-ocracy, it’s got nothing for me but a taunting challenge, the offer of a prize I never had . . . I never knew

So anyway, music.

That thing that this blog is supposed to be about. Well probably actually not. I just happen to make music and I just happen to blog and if the more I do it, the better it gets and the closer it gets to somewhere where it all just forges together, the all the better.

I sound pretty self assured for a guy actually started this post a week ago but didn’t get round to finishing it because y’know, I guess blogging about the music you’re making really pushes toward the edge of creative redundancy because why would you over analyze the process without just y’know getting on with making some beats?

So yes working on finishing about 8 or 9 tunes off there’s a couple that are basically finished and then blah blah blah. And doing this to that and that to this and yeah.

No but seriously I’m really applying myself right now to “Wine Cooler” and “Low Key” and well yeah, basically getting on with it!

Getting geared up for the Dojo Inspectors release, yo!

Um yeah, like actually doing it!

I guess I could write some stuff about something that’s making me terribly upset and all angsty but no, it’s just music full steam ahead.

Boring huh?

There’ll be lots of free CD’s, a free download, be doing some other stuff to promote it, but mainly giving away HEAPS of CD’s, and whatever creative stuff I can think of around that that will get the mix out there.

Also on tour in the South Island october . . .

This is a song I seriously wrote in the last 20-30 minutes, I timed myself on twitter.

What’s with that?

I dunno deep, restless reactions to the minimal stuff I’ve been hearing on the Reach Podcast of Instra:mental, + saw Spectrasoul last Saturday . . .

It’s like a rebirth for intelligent D’n B for those of us not really feeling the Dubstep, and it’s making a lot of D’n B we used to listen sound crass and zealous.

love a good Zeitgeist ya’ll. In a sandwich.

This ones called “Donk is Good Food” Because it’s got a “Donk on it” obviously, and in the news in Auckland, NZ this week – “In Tonga, Dog is Good Food” says a Tongan man who barbecued his pitbull because it scared his wife, but he wasn’t charged as the dog was killed humanely, that is he bashed it unconscious over the head with a spade.

Now I’m a vegetarian and I think animals are okay.

What I think is wrong is to have double standards about our preachy judgements.

My neighbour wants to marry his boyfriend, my other neighbour wants to barbecue his dog, and I want to smoke shit and make beats.

Live and let live I say. Let he who is without sin yo . . .
