I am really heavy into this archiving vibe, because I’m deadly about getting super organised and sorted out. EVerything needs to be sorted and organised that’s what business is all about, but archiving is good, managing the information and items that are your responsibility in an effective way, without friction.

On one hand it’s an extention of the stuff science concept, that owning and monitoring and maintaining and navigating more physical possessions and digital possessions

But you get a little bit wrapped up, I know it’s important to maintain focus, but when I start focusing on stuff like piles of CD and DVD from years of jobs gone past, or devoting energy to your worst songs when your best are probably still in front of you. To even be spending nights sorting out computer files while people are out living seem a little bit at odds to what I’m trying to achieve.

But here I am, I’m not sure what the true worth of getting pissed and wandering around really is, but I’m like all in on this Low Key video which is really uping the amount of original content in our soul science drum and bass music videos, and I see that this is good, but it’s also good because I’m out there, wandering around with the camera, boiling down all the old bones to get a nice broth of vibes going, just from wandering around with a shitty $100 mini camera.

But anyway I’m staying focused on the goals, grinding out the low key clip which will defiinitely be a jump up I reckon because of the original footage pervading the mix, even though it’s shot really crappily on my gshot camera. I’m getting all the giveaway stuff loaded up to the site so my designer has got everything he needs to build a sweet little box where you can cycle through the mixes available.

Make Believe, my best dj mix, and Decks and the City, probably not my best but one that would have gotten a lot of play, probably the hardest one I pushed, and you never know nostalgic cats may download it if they were into it at the time. Make Believe, Tough Love, Gentleman Caller, Decks and the City, and Who Loves Ya? Are my 5 official studio mixes. So I’m giving away 2 of those, and the others will be for the newsletter.

You can have a lot of good stuff, but if you want even more, you need to join the newsletter. You can have the Such Heavy Wings producer mix because then you get a nice chunk of my stuff to listen to at once, even though it’s old. You can have the Down and Out Chill out mix, because it’s a great mix to enjoy for everyone, so a good thing to get out. The Make or Break mix is 100% unsigned NZ electronic music so has got made obscurity, and connects with one of my other markets – local underground electronic music enthusiasts, local underground producers, beat dungeon family. So that’s what my little free bundle is all about.

What’s not free is Oceanic Chill and Soul Science releases obviously, to me Dojo Inspectors should be available, but not for free, maybe keep that as a treat fro special soul science fans. I want it to be a testament to our depth that from 2009 you can check we had 31 solid tunes, a few of which came to be released in 2011. Dojo Inspectors is like our version of our early live recordings, I want to leverage them because it’s not worth selling but it’s too notable to just give away. BUT because it’s 80 minutes of music you want to give fans access to something they can listen to again and again rather than a song that cycles clumsily a few times around the ipod, a song is designed to find it’s way into other DJ’s sets.

So now this is the thing, if our next music video is getting done and the website developments are being shuttled along, then we’re left with 3 directions.

- Continue deep into the archiving, living like a race of dwarven trolls under the mountain of data and various hoardings. We have to ask where this is seriously heading, is it really something to get done with, or is it meant to be something you do as you do, that beyond practicality you’re just taking stock for the sake of busy work and because it makes me feel all cosy to spend an hour sorting out something that wll only ever give me the odd pleasures now and again when I go over them, rather than having any true artistic merit or contribution to make to my overall development.

- the pirate thing, it is going huge,we need to fill in to the vibe here and get it set. We need to get this photo shoot done. Both of these things are being

- Tax. How boring. But it has to be done. The sort of thing to be done, that just needs to be done and sorted and forgotten, but again, what after tax? Tax and the business set up to be done in about a month.

I’m trying to get business intelligence here, I’m trying to look at my analytical and systemic processes.

The philosophies on display here are:

- We need to have everything processed because better organisation is a more efficient and creative environment for the business.

- We need to plan the execution of sophisticated strategies that will contribute to growing our business, even if we are only ensuring some aspect of our brand meets a perceived market standard.

- We need to be diligent and active in areas that could raise potential issues slowing productivity and causing stress

Which statement do I most agree with?

I dunno. After Low Key I need to get the video for Pure Juice happening. I got songs I gotta do, Kingsland Dawn, It’s Done, Hang em High, we want tunes that are done coming down, and we need Dark Matter back coming entering the fray.

Are you gonna talk about what the end of archiving means, I mean really get into it? Well, no not 1000 words in, if it even isn’t just getting on with videos and tunes anyway, I mean 20 tunes later, a dozen videos later, videos piling up, archives all stacked up on the site, ads sending people through to get in, you get your 1000 fans and you feel people care about the music you’re doing, people want to buy it. You start writing decent tunes and you’re in. People want you to play around the world even if you never make any money. You get cheques from labels so you can buy yourself some thoughtful purchases, you get $200 to play in your home city and $500 outside, and there’s plenty of offers.

But of course when you get there, it’s no longer a dream. Well that’s why the dream is modest. I think my material needs are somewhat modest in context, and I should hope with some work in the same way as i have with my business, the recognition I get for the work I try to do in earning the appreciation of people who like drum and bass, and strange youtube stuff, and rambling journals of expressions will be enough for me to simply enjoy it.

They’re gone now but didn’t it just open my mind right up, we’re not done. I couldn’t really be bothered filming, but I was working on the Beyond Faith clip

It’s been basically punk rock philosopher intellectuals round here, gothic technicians fighting off zombies to live out our indulgent lives, blogging and calling out for the search party. Search Party is actually getting quite serious now, because we’re searching for a party, whatever research we can access in furthering the anti-cause, the indulgent middle class anti movement of nihilistic hedonism.

The devil will make work for idle hands.

A bit of blogging to clear out the pipes, I was running around for various halloween fixtures and managed to actually get out and get out there a bit, see some different music, some different people, catch some different vibes. In amongst it, I totally nailed that clip for Beyond Faith there wasn’t much else for it. I managed to do it in a day, and I was really stoked with that, but then had more encoding issues and gave up.

But good news – the video fro the Soul Science tune “Beyond Faith” which is a lush little minimal drum and bass tune out on the Rotation Deep compilation “Definitions of the Deep” is now up and ready to check out.

Can I tell you a story about beyond faith? I need to have a little commentary about it and if I don’t do it now, then I probably never will.

Well I named it after a girl I saw. She never did anything wrong but does that ever matter?

It’s a flower growing on a rock face, does it ever matter beyond human eyes that hear it’s song, and feel it’s poetry and yet it is only another scrawl in the literacy of meaninglessness . . . beyond our wants, needs and desires, beyond our hopes, beyond faith, there simply is . . .

Beauty doesn’t exist without you to think it’s beautiful, beautiful has no meaning beyond our perception of it and so we hold and cherish it like somehow it must matter.

Then I draw on our recent investigations into psychology for to understand meaning we must understand ourselves, but we were drawn to the quote:

“Not only is it meaningless and empty, but it is also empty and meaningless that it is empty and meaningless.”

Meaninglessness at it’s deeper core, isn’t dramatic, it’s empty, it simply doesn’t matter, and a girl, and a flower and a thought and a great philosophy is not really more than what is in our heads in a moment while we are still alive and not returned to dust.

It’s a paradox that these moments are both meaningful in us and meaningless in time.

I didn’t want her to see me, I moved quickly. she was still there as she always was, in her way, me in mine, whatever judgements that bestowed on me . . . whatever made her beautiful made me whatever I was, it was only just another moment passed in the history of time, all in my head.

Beyond a pretty girl, beyond my own thoughts, none of it truly mattered, it was already done and gone. Beyond the comforting processes by which we perceive and construct the world in our minds, was a discomforting truth of more worlds, more possibilities, more lies and many truths.

I think it’s about a philosophical rebound, beyond faith there is nothing, and everything, because everything is faith, faith is meaning, because beyond faith is only meaninglessness.

Man, this got really confusing, but what I ended up trying to say was something along the lines of saying beyondthe subjective is nothing, because everything is subjective, beyond faith is only nothing, a truth that doesn’t exist, only serving to reinforce our faith and belief in the systems we have to understand the universe, or a girl or anything else.

First up – “Pure Juice” by Squeezer – The Remixes out on New Clear Music featuring the Soul Science Remix

The latest release on Newclear Music is also the first official release by Auckland’s Squeezer. On Monday 29th of August, we’re dropping a 5-track remix EP containing works by newcomer Will Marshall, Cartoon boy Haszari, AKL DNB duo Soul Science, and the label’s own nsu. In addition to those, we also have Squeezer’s new “TSV” rework of the original.

Full background info on the remix EP can be obtained in the press release.

On Facebook link

On itunes

Probably the bangsteringest tune we done yet, it’s hard work writing dancefloor devastators, but the uplifting vibe of the original squeezer track was too good, and this is pretty close to the kind of beats I’d like to write, big tunes that have uplifting future funk vibes but drop with ferocious tear outs.

It’s a hard thing to pull. You can definitely tell that the uplifting vibes are all about successful champions grasping for championship glory, in a split second the hope of victory catches light in the mind of a champion, that’s why I have to get some quarterbacks and some jet fighters on this. Not only do we want successful all american elvis dudes who date the head of the cheerleading squad but when after scoring the winning touchdown, soviet danger threatens, Troy is called on to fight for freedom in the sky.

You can tell when the bassline drops, Troy is in a heavy dogfight with a couple of dirty evil cossacks, and he has to rely on his football knowledge to outsmart the reds, and so he totally like “goes long” and shoots them down by targeting his laser beams onto them, mainly because he is striving to protect the american way of life that he loves for himself as a striving champion for victory and freedom to be frickin awesome.

There’s definitely war and peace, it’s yin and yang, all things in balance. But it’s also about glory, an my whole absurd realism trip. You can’t be a high school quarterback and a jet fighter. That’s just some absurd concept of what it is in 20th century american culture to be a real winner. A real winner is an ideal, an so an ideal is brought to life in rugged misappropriated cliches. We all want to be winners. We all want the pure juice, the pure goodness, the pure source of energy, but is it even real or some nonsense we saw on TV?

Heaps of artists have themes in their work and I like quarterbacks who fly into space and do karate chops and ninja stars on space zombies, and robot tigers with laser shooting turrets. Maybe the space zombie aliens are dinosaurs. Long story short is we’re just getting started on this so let’s move on, but it’s basically deep vibes in victory for winners, who have to have funky tearing battles and rampaging struggles.

DOWNLOAD LATEST BEAT DUNGEON NZ BEATS

My latest radio show on the Beat Dungeon is up here – lots of chilled vibes and all 100% NZ electronica – downbeat, dubstep, future bass, housey business a bit of drum and bass, and ding donging around, check it out here

Did I put up the link for Beyond Faith? That’s my Jam out on Rotation Deep check it out into your check out, add to cart each and every time come to deep up the party.

And of course the vid for power supply, gonna get some more vids runnin soon!

Man I am like a prolific artist and stuff, I’m probably going to have to get some cool sunglasses because of how I’m the man.

Seriously, Drum and Bass, it’s just a thing y’know, it’s no big deal, I’m a stonecold superstar like that, I’m like y’know, checking my portfolio, I shouldn’t have sold my Telecom shares so early, but I think I’ve made a strong pick in AirNZ.

I mean I do have some new music out and stuff, you can check it out, not like I care because I’m such an artiste and I’m poolside closing the next big deal.

In fact I really am too arty and creative to even be writing this blog now and I would rather feel that I just remain just at a creative peak in terms of my thought processes, in a kind of a more static, kind of um receptive posture. I need to seek guidance from my zumba instructor.

I need to consult my runes, okay, I’ve got an appointment to have my positive power centres healed later so I don’t have time for this bullshit.

New Deep Drum and Bass Stuff Right Now:

Matt Turner is small business owner in Auckland New Zealand, he’s been involved in the local drum and bass scene for some time. Lately his behaviour in a lot of areas has been described as erratic and somewhat eccentric but he does have a past association with drug use and mild mental illness incidents, so it isn’t exactly considered a completely unexpected diagnosis that these symptoms could be indicative of some kind of episode or condition that appears to have progressed.

This is a special Drum and Bass TL:DR because apparently the drum and bass guys flipped over to the morphospace right? That is like one serious hall of mirrors trip right there, but that will access the archive and begin the process, it’s important and I think I will benefit from the experience of knowing my personal heritage is well represented.

The archiving has begun. I am uploading new ancient tunes to my gallery of museum piece mp3’s and I just pulled 10 tunes out from 2007 – 2008 some of them never released (y’know, uploaded to myspace or whatever) and I’m getting stuck in, there’s some vibes ready to happen when I start jacking up these old gems with a fresh shiny roll out.

The point of the archive is so that people – including myself – can experience my thing in an accessible way, they can wade in to depth that’s suitable for them without being bombarded with information, like those lost in the morphospace, our intrepid drum and bass heroes aren’t so scornful of blogging now.

Man seriously I’ve been doing so much tunes and video I had to take massive brain dumps on my blog.

That’s what this post is, most of those brain dumps just dumped down a cliff, I thought about multiple posts but that’s just spreading this shit further, by puting down the TLDR stamp, normal humans know not to read all this rambling nonsense.

On one hand, nobody wants to read all this and nobody probably will but on the other, when google sees I’ve got huge long posts on my blog going on about drum and bass, once I get some decent links and things kick off a bit I bet this page will pull in random traficc because it’s a beast of a post. So I totally have to mention insurance, loans and mortgages.

My blog is like my gym where I work and tone various parts of my intellectual fitness. Seriously, others like to work their body into shape, I like to get my mind into shape, that’s what my blog gets to be about until I go from a hundred people here a day, to hundreds, then I’ll probably have to put on some kind of show I guess.

Right now, well you see I always wanted to be a drum and bass producer, not really because I was that good at it but because I thought it would be cool to do. You can make it by yourself, I’ve made at least 100 finished song, hundreds unfinished. Being a musician or an artist is being somebody who is interesting because they’re telling stories and are interested in understanding and interpreting. Drum and Bass to me is still a futristic, danceable groove with lots of room for soulful licks, and I’ve just gotten good because I’ve sat here doing it for so long. To me drum and bass is really about . . . I don’t really know that many who are impressed by my drum and bass, and in fact I only really have active social involvement with drum and bass people.

I have no financial or social or sexual gain to make from drum and bass. The only reasonable explanation is that wanting to make drum and bass comes from a deeper part of me, and like Sir Edmund Hilary, doesn’t get half way up Mt. Everest and say well . . .

“Snow, rocks, cliffs . . . BORING, let’s go home.”

Running round grabbing cash and girls endlessly has a meaninglessness to it that you can only appreciate fully from a place of experience – I merely stand on tippy toes peer at the possibility and suppose that . . . there’s always something more.

That writing tunes and art is higher, it’s not just about power and sex, it’s about understanding, about abstract definitions of existence. To me, I could get a vinyl out one day. What does it mean? It means I wrote a tune that thousands of people got into and 10 or 20 thousand people will probably hear and rock out to, just by moving 1000 units.

What more could I ask for in the next decade if 100,000 people hear my tunes and think they’re all good? What else am I supposed to do? I believe I can do it, and it’s a pure belief based on something I want for myself. I expect myself to be someone capable of producing a tune that would move 1000 vinyls.

Is that selfish?

I saw beyond for a moment, that there’s a place of more being than achieving.

At first I wanted to say something, now I find myself just wanting to do it. It’s about the ability to let yourself go.

I gotta drop a blog on it just to switch back, barricaded studio side night after night, by day starting to haul back all this money I’m owed all over the place, then I flick open the DAW (that’s a Digital Audio Workstation for those who don’t know) each day to realise I’d thrown down solidness til the dawn, and it was all coming back.

Why talk around it, this is what it’s about. Throwing down in art. Never done as much work on one track in a night ever, plus an ill jam, then the next night, another ill jam, and then last night half finished another tune, which is now actually almost done too.

Putting down tracks like this is getting me jacked, especially because that’s essentially my focus, if I can finish three tunes a week, if it’s possible, then well . . . I haven’t even pondered the possibilities other than getting a trip to europe, south america, australia to play because I end up on enough podcasts, and plenty of people turn up here to see how strange I am, and wonder why I always mention insurance, mortgages and loan applications. Mysteries of the universe.

We turned up early but the crowd was already in full swing, mostly older crowd, locals, connections, the core people close to the organisation.

The main area was just huge speakers that took up , some kid who looked about 12 – because he was, maybe 13, 14 – was warming up with crowdpleasing drumstep and dubstep before kicking into deeper dub territory, either way, the speaker were getting a work out early on.

Well what’s it leading to?

You’re locked in to these numbers, again, but it’s a means, if we get 50 tunes released, which means writng at least another 100 tunes, which would probably take me 2 years . . . I should be able to get a free holiday.

We know this one, don’t we? We need tunes that get the fans. Tunes that take us from where we are, to where we want to be, which is, always being paid for gigs, here and overseas. So we got to either produce tonnes of tunes, or preferably, some better quality tunes. My theory is the more you write, the better you get, I’m running numbers, if I can write 50 tunes a year, 20 of them will be worth putting out and maybe a few of them will be good songs.

I’m finishing “Animals” and “Weirdos” for SP Breaks, they just need tidying up . . . because the songs are still a bit messy and sloppy, so I have to get really tight. If I didn’t use weird sampling all the time I wouldn’t get into so much trouble, but sampled instruments aren’t doing much for me.

Then “Dark Matter” has been put on the bench and “Kings” is going in, which makes sense. It’s a stronger tune, but an older tune, very safe dubwise jungle vibes, and of course a big breakthrough tune for me finding more space in the groove, really studying calibre. Accepting now that there’s a standard to maintain and “Dark Matter” doesn’t fit that standard – yet – well, is tough, but that’s what leveling up is all about.

It’s good to get out of town. I have had a serious triangulation session and once again did the most work on one song ever in one night, I don’t think you can ever really finish a tune in one night, but this was as close as I’ve gotten and it’s moody roller about kingsland and the places where girls live around there.

The music kicked off and some guys started rocking out on guitars but it got old quick, the trance guys kicked off and nobody wanted to know.

I started talking to this chick Denise who was clearly on another planet, but I kept talking to her because I could see her cute friend looking over at us.

I also wrote a nasty ass drumstep tune, probably because I was pretty impressed by the big stupid anthems the kid had been rocking out. I call it “Brap Brap (Swag)” it’s a UK riots inspired tune about the callous marginalised youth getting theirs the only way that’s being made available to them. Of course a drumstep tune is a bit beyond our engineering prowess right now, but to me it’s still cool to show around the fact you can make a banger if you want to.

But the reality is, it’s the minimal deep drum and bass vibes I’m putting down that are getting noticed, and that’s because deep vibes are really my thing.

Again with this kingsland joint, deep rolling bass and moody soul vibes, that’s where we’re picking up traction. And then I wrote another funky latin groove with another deep bassline, this time with crazy funky tech bass stabs – a lot of basslines I write are pretty much also accented with sick bass stabs and I’m getting better and putting them into a lick with a lot of twisted bass funk.

And now I just started on another deep one with deep futuristic chords – they just start out trying to be deep minimal tunes but then I end up beefing them into legit rollers and – and . . . well it’s like . . . forget blogs all the time, because we’re putting down.

I got this “Kingsland Dawn” track almost finished, this new one “So Good” cooking, it’s definitely drunken backstreets of ponsonby and grey lynn where I grew up, the glare from the city rising up behing the houses and the trees like I fire. And then I think “Mojitos” has traction simply because it’s a super rolling, infectious bassline.

The main tunes I’m trying to finish off which don’t have a label yet is “Hang ‘em High”, “It’s Done” and “Trinity”, which, if I manage to put in the pen and get signed away, takes the count to 17, plus our 2 benchwarmers “Paper Tigers” and “Dark Matter”, takes it to 19, making a count of 20 tunes released this year, which was pretty much my goal. 20 tunes is a lot, for me it’s going to allow me to focus on quality and letting go of tunes that aren’t up to scratch as the bar is continually raised.

Quality is the determining factor but I can see, my tunes just keep getting better in tiny increments, new gear will boost our sound, and sometime next year, an A- List DJ will play one of our tunes. Hopefully I’ll have more luck here, visitors are increasing.

So I said how much is a tune worth? Got about 10 now, what if I had 20? What would that be worth? It’s going to take a while before people start to notice. Houw to you gauge it? By what I can afford, and I’ m a real tightfist. I’m not paying $4000!

But think about it. If I figure I have to release another 50 tunes before I can tour, what would that be worth??

I assume that my earning will equal my costs and lost income, so seriously, it would have to be worth no less than $10,000 to have that lifestyle?

Do numbers, you spend 17 days away, you try and play 9 gigs for wait . . . I have costs of $600, I have to save $500, if they can cover my travel and accommodation, 3 gigs fot $500 each should cover me. You get me? As long as I can get 3 gigs for $500 in a week, I can go anywhere. And what’s more, I can set up my business to run, so I bet I can still swag $500 a week.

The craziest thing of course is there’s no money issue. For the first time my money and my music is on target.

I feel like I’ve learnt to juggle 2 balls, and if I can keep this up I will be ready to add the third.

I’m not going to try and release 20 tunes next year, I’m philosophically committed to release no more than 19, but they’ll all be better than the best of this years. That may not be get me to fully fledged free holiday status, but come 2013, if I can keep this pace, my tunes will start to get too good, and once my tunes are sneaking in on the drum and bass top 100, there’s no reason I can’t start looking for an opportunity to get my free holiday.

Primary directive is my cash reserve, whatever I can do with music, for me it is about stages and levels, which unfortunately means I can’t properly focus on chasing girls until I know I’m definitely on track for a vinyl release and spending a few weeks abroad every few months. We need to run numbers.

I’ve written almost 2 tunes already this week. I can chill. Can I? Yes, I’ve done some music, I just have to keep the vibe going to the next level, week after week, throwing down tunes, not stumbling, always putting down my tunes, like I always get my cash.

the idea is to write everything like cloning from the mother plant.

I’ve written almost 2 tunes already this week. I can chill. Can I? Yes, I’ve done some music. My brain is almost clean and dumped out from all this activity. I can chill for now.

Yeah so that’s the new deep drum and bass stuff for now, get back to the story? It’s the season finale, everyone was trying to work out the connection between the desert nomad, the detective and their connection to the therapist and his patients. Bet you didn’t guess they were all clones participating in a simulation, right?

This one guy says he talks to god.

Not complicated enough for you? The producer calls the writer and says he wants some more drum and bass guys in it to push the music. The writer doesn’t want to put drum and bass DJ’s in his story but he does it anyway, like they cross dimensions with a space captain probably entering the archival non place known as the morphospace.

DUN DUN DUN THE MORPHOSPACE (true fans are like OMG right now, like the DJ’s are totally like, in the morphospace)

The space captain is here in Auckland, but what if the writer is another clone? The where are the DJ’s?

No such thing as too many layers. This ain’t hollywood. Go on add some more stuff.

Add a dog that talks and has 3 legs.

Don’t be silly, don’t test me. Don’t try and be clever, we do drum and bass and philosophy here in a serious way, and because it’s the season finale the heroes are going to break into the secret archive and reveal new knowledge, the screenwriter will remember the significance of the twist that he forgot, the space captain will discover the clone lab, and layers peel off like an onion, the detective hunting the friday night killer, the desert warrior who pursues the fox, the mental patient who tries to unlock himself and then the drum and bass DJ’s at the centre who apparently crossed over to another dimension and enterest the morphospace?

I’m not sure about the drum and bass DJ’s to be honest. We need to iron that one out a little still, though it seems that the drum and bass dudes may be the only guys who are actually real, like a sin even I’m not real.

Well what would I be doing if I wasn’t real? Who is really real, are the drum and bass guys the only ones who could be real because while the clones are subjects of the choice matrix, they’re the only ones who don’t know what they’re doing? What is the meaning of the choice matrix experiment?

Just time for a round up of links, news, free mp3’s and such. Need to do this more often because well, it’s what people want, and I have been peeling through a few articles and blog posts recently.

You may have heard after 13 years and one location shift, Fu Bar / Zen Auckland’s home of drum and bass, dubstep, and a fair few hip hop internationals and such is to close. That’s gonna mean a few changes in my approach to what I’m doing around town, it’ll certainly make for a few changes, there’ll be a vacuum, so who’s the first sucker ready to get sucked in and spat out because they think they’re a player?

Is it my time to step up some, or play my cards close to my chest and see what develops – one thing for sure, bass culture in Auckland city will never be the same and is for some interesting shifts.

Check out the press release here.

Also in drum and bass related news, Sub Focus has signed with Mercury Music for 600,000 pounds. That’s a fair old amount, good to see there’s still some money floating around in drum and bass.

Experimental / Minimal Drum and Bass artists Instra:Mental’s “No Future” remixed by ASC and local lad and former Fu Bar employee Consequence

This free tune from Julien Dyne of Open Souls is a ripper and well worth grabbing on the soulful beats tip. When I moved into Richmond Rd taking Evan from Concord Dawn’s old room, Julien had moved out previously also but there were a lot of music connections in that flat.

If you’re after some chewy and tasty free soulful / funky / afro beats check out the label love 3 compilation for free download I grabbed a soulful new vocal tune from local Mark De Clive-Lowe.

Classic New Zealand experimental / ambient / shoegaze band HDU have put their catalogue up on bandcamp – it’s not free, but it means you can finally stream some of these tunes at leisure, something I’m often key to do living out the memories from when I saw them play at the Mandalay in Newmarket. Cool gig.

Here’s their big tune Lull.

Also some Garagey business from White On Rice. Who’s this DJ Import? There was a DJ Import from Wellington who dissed the fuck out of me a fair few years back in the Data:Bass days, sending me abusive emails, I don’t even know who the hell he is, but I would gladly return the favour by taking the opportunity to make him uncomfortable should the opportunity present itself. Hope it’s not the same guy.

BRAINFOOD

Man I’m glad I did this to realise how few links I actually have of all the reading I’ve been doing recently. Need to tweet that out more, so I can come back and find the articles.

Psychology article on Narcissism

Was the agricultural revolution the worst mistake the human race ever made?

The philosophy of Viagra raises some interesting questions – “When the appetites relax and cease to importune us,” explains Cephalus, “we escape from many mad masters.”

I’ve said it before, as much as I want to be hooking up with multiple hot models, would it make the world a better place? I don’t think so, somehow.

On the UK riots, just adding my favourite article from Telegraph political editor Peter Orborne – funny, I heard later that the Telegraph is the tory paper.

You can see a map representation of areas of social deprivation overlaid with locations where riots broke out.

UK riots in combination with the disdain and cynicism of corporations in New Zealand such as coca cola, adidas and fonterra has got me wondering about middle class activism.

The ruling class relies on our education, our skills, and our complicitness in being paid off with big money to behave ourselves and not agitate against the systems of oppression.

Refusing to work for fonterra doesn’t help me, it hurts me. They just go to somebody else, who is more ignorant and greedy than I, and what does that achieve?

This is cool because now some decent tunes that are worthwhile to hear are coming out finally and I guess . . . well, deepness is my forte. If you think you’re going to test me on deepness, you’re going to find a problem there. A situation.

Tune is sounding really well, damn it’s gotta be the best engineered tune I ever put out – big up rotation deep HQ – and not really picking up any tuning issues, god so so many nights spent trying to tune all these samples it was pretty demoralising. I think I got stuck in my head a little bit on that one.

Of course will do a full post on this tune when it drops.

I am slogging away working on my website and my video for power supply, not that I’m actually doing any of the actual work, I’m just getting in with these outsourced cats and getting the job sorted out so I actually get what I want, this time . . .

I’m already thinking of what the site will look like in the end – 2 or 3 iterations later – and the amount of deliberation required to get the vibe pitch perfect.

I was browsing all kinds of winning designs and seeing how much vibes they were throwing down just with really big strong images, and clean, simple design.

It’s hopeful to think that announcing long boring posts as “TL:DR”’s could kind of be a way to lock away endless ramblings but no doubt it’ll just allow me to write more droning raves, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to get the blog a bit snappier at least. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll learn eventually.

Soul Science – Low Key / Power Supply – is out now // Soulscience – Power Supply/Lowkey (AMBRA003) Release Date 28/07/2011 by Ambra Recordings

What do you do when you’re a DJ?

What do you want to do?

Get free holidays. Get paid to play even in my hometown. Be able to charge decent coin for festivals. Sometimes get a cheque for selling music and be like . . . hey! And sell lots of advertising for insurance, mortgages and loans of course!

One day, write a really awesome tune, press 500, maybe even 1000, and selling them all in a few months. That’s the one.

So I just finally finished off my “Pure Juice” remix, I really wanted to make it something, but hey, I gave it my best, and I think I gave it the right attitude. Not being satisfied is the right attitude, and also just moving on if you can’t pull a next level play off.

But that’s the 8th tune I’ve finished this year and I’ve got another 3 that I’m also finishing for release, so if you think about it, it beats any other year when I might not have really released more than one or two things in a proper way. I’m actually having probably my best year in music yet, it’s just that it’s not all a big thrill like it used to be so it doesn’t seem big. Digital labels, podcasts, this is what it is now.

You get a tune on some DJ’s who has more clout than you, then . . . sweet. Rinse and repeat. Get your rep.

But hey, what’s a proper way to release tunes? What’s proper? Pretending all those dozens of crappy tunes I gave away online and on crappy homemade CD’s never happened?

Well . . . no! But you can’t insist on dumping ratty demos on your fans unless they’re insane enough to want to know. That’s the archive is about, for me to enjoy.

When I’m 70, I want to just get insane piles of crazy drugs, go into my website and then just play, stream two, three hundred songs I wrote and get twisted, get my perceptions deepened, reflect, find meaning. Spend up on a millenium of hosting fees, so any time between now and the decline of civilization as we know it, crazy nosey people can wander into my strange little digital cave.

But that’s behind the door, really you just want to make a few points about the vibe with the music, maybe some of the better tunes that stand up or have a significance. You don’t want to be forcing dozens of crappy sounding tracks on people. If they want to hear all kinds of crappy tunes there will be full lists available.

Different lists and categories for people to check through, different filters.

Time/chronological filter, self-release/label filter (retail filter), professional mastering filter.

There’s a relative point where unless it’s research, curious interest or fanatic obsession, normal, fresh fans don’t want to listen to a bunch of crappy old tunes, but in 6 months time I probably still won’t have 20 tunes properly mastered and released on proper labels. So it makes sense that I would want to showcase some of my demos that were popular over the years, especially because at the time they were my top songs, not just an old demo going nowhere.

So people can see I HAVE written almost 100 songs. To me, I am very attached to the fact that I have been writing for years, I am not a natural, and I just struggled my way through. And if one day I actually become good, then people can recognise it wasn’t a hollywood story, I’m not special, I didn’t have any talent for music, I just worked hard.

No talent for music, just passion and enthusiasm.

But after a few years with 50 odd tunes on release, the you get a little tighter, sure, you can see the demos from the mid 00’s if you like but hey. Who knows how I’ll choose to curate my collection. It’s about keeping the real fans supplied with as much info as they can take in, but not turning off casual fans who are in the process of digging around and dveloping an interest.

You don’t want to say HEY! LISTEN TO DOZENS OF CRAPPY DEMO’S FROM THE MID 00′S!!!

You come up with something new. The “Early Days” mix. “Free Download Era” 2004 – 2007. Little curated collections, you see what’s going on? hyper curation. Curation of curation. Meta curation!

You want to use your website to offer the 5 minute experience or the 5 hours (or 5 days???) experience depending on what fans want.

But for now we need to distinguish between the more serious music offerings and old demos, by using proper labels and professional mastering as 2 of the main qualifying breaks.

You got to be able to buy it, but especially, on itunes or beatport. And it should be mastered. That’s the ideal of a proper release, it is to me now, anyway. If you can’t buy it on a decent site, or you can’t play it in a club next to your favourite tune without it sounding seriously second rate, then it’s not really up to scratch is it?

So Recognition was my first tune, Release was the first one played on Radio, Tunes like Moving On and Metro Sound were the first ones to start getting thousands of downloads. Almost Home was the first one released on Tmet. So I guess that was my first release. I got my tunes for Oceanic Chill mastered – Where’s Baby, and Mandroid Remix, as well as Small Turtle. Then I think comes My Tom Bosley and Sharkweek Remixes because especially the sharkweek remixes were mastered and came out on a label. There’s the NSU remixes I did – Neutron Star, the one with the numbers – 16786. Is that it? Yup just the 2 before recently.

So how will it be presented in the archive? Music timeline, the there’ll be little periods on that timeline, but then there will also be a purchase (reverse) timeline, of tunes you can purchase. I guess an official discography too? That’s what I’m talking about I guess, but it will also include demos that appeared on themed CD’s (data:bass releases etc) and were uploaded to mp3 sites for distribution.

Why is this important all of a sudden? Because it’s nice to put your memories in a little box and to be able to show off and curate your work. Come with me back to 2001 and hear some of the music I made – they’re good songs but I really can’t understand how I thought my music sounded like what was coming through the speakers at a club. I do want to experiment with putting these songs into mixes, or doing crazy mashups where they morph into futuristic bangers.

I’ve been kind of down on myself about not getting anything done since I managed to get work kind of controllable, but then I already know I’ll probably release 11 tunes – at least – this year. Sure not really great tunes, but still, tunes coming out properly on labels and being played by some DJ’s. That’s great.

What if I release at least 11 tunes next year, but they were all better than this 11? That’d also be great. They’d be startig to be pretty good tunes, and if in 2013 I released at least another 11 tunes even better than that, then I reckon my tunes would be selling, the top drum and bass DJ’s would be playing the tunes, and I could tour strategically off it. I might get a cheque for selling music. I might even get offered a vinyl. Sweet.

So I was saying how like well, it takes months to get a tune out, I get that now. You can possibly speed it up, but why bother? It’s like packing kiwifruit. Just get another tray on the conveyer belt. Damn, now I’m thinking about packing kiwifruit. But any way, at the end of the line, someone’s eating juicy kiwifruit, it just takes time to get there.

It’s like this. Getting good gigs, sure, but not getting paid. Tunes up for sale, but sales will be a drop in the ocean, negligible. I hope at least more people start coming to the blog but it means I have to start writing more about relevant subjects. Or, not even, just try and do a writing good, so it’s not always going on and on. Try and write about something. Including the old insurance quotes, mortgages, and loan approval, but just – less stream of conscious and more diligently framed pieces.

But the point is there’s a way to start getting paid for gigs and make enough money from your tunes that you bother to notice, and most of all throngs of people who can’t come to your gigs and download the music free or off some podcast, come to your blog and start milling around because I write whole bunches of droning nonsense that people can get down with. Because I’m a remotely acknowledged Drum and Bass D-lister.

Tunes. It’s all about having the tunes.

If your tunes are great, they will sell, if they sell, then DJ’s will be playing them and fileswapping will be all on, and pretty soon you can get bookings and tour. That’s all I ever wanted. A free holiday.

I mean to me if DJ’s are playing your tunes around the world, and you get a free holiday every few months – without loss of income – that’s a big qualifier, but also in New Zealand, that’s what I’m talking about.

You need to be able to do a dozen gigs a year in NZ that make you $500. That’s what I mean. You do 2 tours and a few festivals so you can make some money. You don’t play in your local club for less than $200.

But you need big tunes. A big tune is all that you’ll need. But there are different audiences, that can be targeted. It would be nice and convenient to score an underground hit in New Zealand, but it might not play that way. We may find that it’s only south america or east europe that we can make happen.

Well what can we write so I can put it on the conveyor belt and get it on?

A vocal tune?

Hang em High
It’s Done
Higher (Remix)
Secret Place
Trinity
Paper Tigers

Ill Fish
Avatar
Drama

I’m pretty sure we have to go on a deep journey. We need to really get deep deep inside the vibe. Maybe I should go on a holiday or a random road trip and hole up in some motel somewhere weird, I guess that’s an aspect of touring I forgot I love – being somewhere where nobody knows you or will be around to remind you what deviousness you got up to.

The freshness and change of circumstances and outlook can get the vibe on, is it easy just to set up your computer and monitors and go crazy? Make something fresh?

That’s only one tangent. For now, finishing one song after the other is fine, and still sharpening my skills, but at some point I’ll want to try to make a fresh move, to come up with something deeper. I can tell that there are deeper spaces to go to, but whether you can come back from those spaces with music that is deeper remains to be seen, but I certainly don’t see why it shouldn’t be strategically investigated, whether by road trip, or otherwise.

On a sunday night you wouldn’t think much is happening.

She’s telling me she’s got this other guy going, well I didn’t think I’d care. Across town the gig is about to begin. Skinny slit windows peer out across the city, I sip my beer waiting for another night to begin.

I try to serve as a good example to not ever get involved with making drum and bass. You can ruin your life. There’s perfectly charming things you can do with your life other than make drum and bass music and play it some club. You could say it’s dangerous, but that’s because everything’s dangerous. Life’s dangerous. So try to keep it discreet. As I used to say on the road “Play discreetly, my lord.”

Don’t worry, it’s a private joke.

People make their paths through the night toward their destiny. It’s a big town, it’s a big city, you never quite know what’s going on, behind the walls and through the doors and I suppose it’s for the best. God knows what she’s doing tonight, what she’s doing right now. The crowd is drifting in from the streets slowly. It was just a sunday night but who needs an excuse?

People have got to do what they have to and unfortunately for me, that means making drum and bass and everything that comes along with it.

In Low Key, the instruments don’t really compete, they all take turns and it turns into a structured journey. A lot of the songs are going there into deep narratives.

“Low Key” I identify as a calibre tribute, I wasn’t trying to sound like calibre, otherwise the guitar wouldn’t be so prominent, but I brought a lot of musty, deep vibes over from the era where he was really starting to kick off, more organic grooving breaks, and I really recognised his bold use of sounds, often cold kind of alien techno sounds stabbing over the warm strings and bass vibes. I don’t really use sound boldly that way except for in “Kings” and “Polyps”, but this is a track that has a conscious Calibre influence, any way.

Haha I’m trolling my own music career. Yeah sorry, don’t worry I’ll tell you later.

Anyway power supply. Definitely suspected of a sad lonesome cowboy involved there but it’s also pretty hazy. There are political overtones to the power supply but they’re not just overt. Mainly it’s about the kinds of things you can’t do without power, without energy, without fuel, so it’s about burning out, cold, empty, wrecked and decaying shells that disintegrate and fade.

That’s where Power supply kind of gets lost in a hazy, dreamy space – where the power can’t flow to make things function properly so you get this lurid wheezing fuzz where you’re drifting into abstraction.

As I said it’s not about a struggle over power, because without the power supply you can’t access data or perform functions.

AMBRA RECORDINGS 003

Continuing the global search for soul-hugging drumnbass, Ambra takes you on a trip to New Zealand, presenting the mystic tribal flavours of rising production duo Soulscience. There’s no mistaking the influence of the pacific ocean in the background of these blissful rollers, so open your mind and shut your eyes…

Power Supply

Sophisticated bird-call synths swirl around a deep jungle rhythm that twists through the trees and creepers of the Soulscience forest. Far from civilization, we guess the Power Supply is needed for the heavy oldschool bassline, minimum 15kW recommended. Ambra yet again proving they select the best back-in-the-day sounds from true drumnbass soldiers.

Lowkey

An infectious acoustic guitar riff rides this intelligent atmospheric rhythm, with meditative bongos driving the tune forward into the night. Deceptively dreamy flute pads rise and fall, the organic percussion holds steady, while a warm sub ensures there’s nothing low-key about the feeling you’ll get from this one on the dancefloor.
