Keen to hear me DJing some sweet drum and bass?

It’s a mix of big party choons, a few tougher numbers and my typical smooth liquid funk.

http://dnbshare.com/download/TOUGHLOVE-DJROMANTECHdjmxDec09-320.MP3.html

It’s the official “Tough Love” mix.

OH WAIT YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT MY MARKETING MUSIC SERVICES – THIS IS MY ACTUAL MUSIC, I MAKE – NOT MY JOB, FOLLOW THE LINK

Mmm so yeah I’m thinking of kicking off my newsletter and not giving a toss. Why not. It’s a good idea to have a newsletter you can make money flogging junk and stuff, i’m kind of good at that.

I guess I’m thinking who would want to read it? I don’t know, why not try it out?

The main idea is also a small step toward video.

It’s just been so hard, I’ve been trying to do this for years now! I’ve got to break this mutha down. If I can start with one newsletter per month, I can then move toward a newsletter and a video per month, plus a free song, and well, we’re good. We’ve got our format.

How hard can that be? The thing I like about it is unlike video, with an automated newsletter you can go back and improve the newsletter, which kind of makes me think of it as the top rung of engagement, in fact if it only ends up being a couple of hundred people and less than half of those even read the thing then that’s fine by me.

But I’m embracing the small step because I hate having a goal and missing it and then ending up discussing it and overanalysing it to beyond meaning, and we don’t want that on the newsletter. The newsletter can be actual me trying to do some decent writing and putting together something decent, and even if I don’t – as I say, unlike a youtube video I can just go back and change it.

No problems. Wait no, lets be serious. If I make it too crazy and all Reality Compound then it might put people who are into serious drum and bass or serious marketing off but if it’s too serious it’ll be boring.

I think I might of been saying it’s all about framing. Do the reality compound stuff but in such a way that drum and bass and marketing people can enjoy. Try to keep it edgy and amusing without offending the mainstream. Do marketing, but make it interesting, relevant. Show off your music, video and other content, but be real, not all indulgent.

Really aim to give people something decent

Use the story, use philosophy, because y’know, this is really all about the ideas I had since I was a young kid that I would be an author one day. Now it’s author 2.0, it’s author of my own destiny.

It’s author as character in their own story it’s an author combining the different media – video, newsletters and blogs, music to tell a story in a new way.

The whole RC dynamic of being a “real character”, which is not really me but a caricature of myself.

Another problem is about the idea of keeping it real vs. trying to not offend anyone and ending up a pussy who can’t say anything that’s real becuase it might offend someone.

I want to be transparent, but isn’t it so burdensome from an entertaining perspective to have to explain and justify everything? If I want to sell penis enlargement on my newsletter because it’s rock and roll and I don’t care, do I really have to explain it and justify it to my readers?

Do I just not sell penis enlargements at all and avoid the problem? Do I only do things I can justify in a sentence?

I just have to come up with a way of working with that content that my audience will accept.

Or that I feel . . . well I think I will have to shave off some raw edges. I think if I decide to promote penis enlargement I better be bloody clever about it.

Play the character of myself. The character of myself would sell penis enlargements on his blog because I’m crazy and he would do that.

The newsletter is a new level ofcloseness to the “fan” – I think I really just have to try it, basically, become my own client.

I think the newsletter is a better goal long term anyway, I mean so what if I can use youtube and be hilarious and irreverent and tell a story that I actually live in, what’s the next step? I become a more dynamic individual to play to the audience? I get a segment on tv? I get together with darcy and work on scripts and shoots?

Isn’t that all a bit typically far reaching? Why don’t I send them to my newsletter so you can maybe build up 150 people who give a shit and buy something once in a blue moon simply because there’s something I’m doing they like. Maybe they don’t like the music, or the marketing stuff, don’t care what I think or they dont think i’m funny or my philosphies are very incisive. As long as they have some reason to read it, i’ll keep reviewing what i’m doing until it’s as good as i can do.

How can I meet the objectives without a list? Something I can work with, improve, make money with as well as work on the detailed process of reconciling my music, my business and my new creative directions.

What if it becomes a bummer like this blog, instead of being cool and awesome, just becomes a depressing testament to how belaboured the whole creative existance has become?

I think that means I need to change up my style. I can ramble on here on my blog, I might still continue to spew words onto the page and send them off for backlink building, ramble on generally, but my newsletter is where I put together episodes that are actually relevant and attempt to tackle the broad range that is my platform.

That’s the whole challenge of a new kind of narrative.

There are some people who will put up with information when they want entertainment and some people who will put up with my attempts to amuse. . . yeah nah, but here are some drafts I’m working on:

But first . . . why not sign up and try it out?

FIRST DRAFT NEWSLETTER: INTRO

Hi it’s Matt here, I’m doing this newsletter.

It is a story, but there’s promotion and creative tips, music to download, and deals on offer.

So even if you don’t like learning about promoting stuff online or not interested in getting music, or videos, or stuff I think is cool, insider deals from my business, kurb, or any of what I’m into, at least it might an interesting story.

Having a newsletter for your project is a great way of building up a group of people you can reach out to but people will tune out if your newsletters aren’t any good. That’s why I want to make all my newsletters super hot – snappy with lots of good material – promotion tips, free music to download, hot hot links, new videos, tears, laughter, and great deals.

What I’m doing here is pretty broad, so it won’t be valuable for everyone, but the people I’m left with will be valuable to me, valuable connections, valuable community.

hopefully

Part of the reason a newsletter is so effective as a money making tool is the ability to make offers that generate generous commissions. I’m not here to persuade you to buy something you don’t need, but to make you aware that these offers do allow me to make generous commissions on sales and whatever I can do to help you to support me by purchasing any of these digital products I’m happy to consider.

That’s why as well as advice, tips, free downloads of content I’ll also be offering special “insider” deals – ways for you get free stuff, but mainly I’m here to write my newsletter, push my content other content I think is exceptional or provocative, if we make a deal and I sell some junk and get paid, well that’s a bonus.

DRAFT CHAPTER ONE, TAKE 2

Internet Money Internet Fame

I had a little taste on the tip of my tongue of internet fame and it was good. I miss the myspace days. But I was broke, it wasn’t real.

But the stuff I learned while messing around on myspace refined my knowledge of internet marketing, because it worked. When something works once, it will often work again and again and it did and I learned reasonably fast.

If your content is poor than you’re not able to be trusted. High quality content embues trust. In my case, I can write well, it makes people trust me.

see this is the second take. on the first take, I got too far into an indulgent narrative. I always tell myself to get to the point of the narrative, which opens the door for information of value to come through. I just need to build the steps, create a clear trail for my audience to follow.

They see a video or whatever and end up on the list,

but I really like the idea of burying the information of value into the narrative.

That’s where I see philosophy coming in, just like any narrative.

Setting/framing, plot/narrative, music, video, alternative content and media . . . conclusion, information, resolution in 500 words, far less than whats here. Snappy.

DRAFT CHAPTER ONE, TAKE 1

At 18 I’d probably read to many modern classics for my own good, my beatnik road movie only got me as far as a job packing kiwifruit on minimum wage, I stood there at the assembly line enduring the monotony in my mind, and once in a while in a tiny moment, I felt something that was about more than me just standing there doing some job.

Well I always got good marks in school but I didn’t do much that was smart after that, 5 years later I was still an idiot. I thought I could be a club promoter. I learnt to build sites in dreamweaver, a bit of SEO, adsense, but anyway, I was broke by then. But myspace changed everything. For the first year I just hung out.

Then I started to do this thing called Reality Compound and the timing was perfect, it was outrageous and took off amongst the local kids. Then I got one of those friend adder bots. Pretty soon I was doing pretty well.

I was listening to my old mixes from 2002 which is basically just after I got my first decks and started DJing.

Well actually my first pair of decks got pinched, one of them belonged to Marek. I think at that stage I’d cobbled together an ancient pair of direct drives, or possibly one was a belt drive with a pitchfader.

Crazy business.

The reggae mix which I put up on soundcloud was pretty sweet but the D’n B mix “Doom” which I put together for a punk party I was playing at – I remember it was the night Bailey was playing in Auckland 2002 – that was just awful.

I wil put it up in the archives one day just so people can laugh at how hopeless my shocking mixing was back then.

But it was also a bit of a shock to hear how dated the tunes were. Sure most of the tunes on the mix were 98-’02 vintage and there were a couple that still stood up including one of my all time favourite dark destroyers, “Quadrant 6″ by Dom & Roland.

I definitely had much darker taste in heavier driving drum’n bass but a lot of it was just, man it wouldn’t stand up right now, that’s for sure.

Dillinja’s “Nasty Ways” was a real suprise. I remember you could always hear a Dillinja tune because it just cut through the mix and was so damn loud, now it’s as if the Dillinja tune was the only one that sounded half way decent by todays standards, all that early BC stuff, man, sounded awful!

I used to love it!

It just really gave me some perspective on it.

People often joke, “man if I’d written this song 5 years ago . . . ” I think it’s true. What was a drum and bass smasher 5 years ago is merely okay sounding now. That’s progress.

It also feeds into that idea at the back of my head that makes me think it’s really just kids shit, it’s a kiddies world, all this drum and bass, y’know I remember how rapid I was about it when I was in my early twenties and I listen back and hear this racket? What was I thinking.

I used to take it so seriously, just like all the young kids I laugh at do. I put my life on hold for this? No wonder my girlfriends and most of my friends weren’t that interested.

No, that’s just a backlash, I think the most important thing is the perspective. There’s so many opportunities to say . . . where did the last 7 years go . . . but when I listen to this music, think about the way I thought, and the way I lived, the music I was making man . . .

come a long way in 7 years, and Drum and Bass sounds wicked now!

All that crap is out of the way, we’re writing truly mature beats . . . I can see now why guys like Calibre, Alix Perez etc. who shook the scene with a certain sound were embraced because it was part of a progression, and I may have been into this game for 12 years now but I’m still at the point where the new music is being made, I’m still about of te progression, I haven’t been left behind yet!

Check out the reggae dub mix for some chill vibes yo

NSU -”NEUTRON STAR” ROMANTECH REMIX (2007) – FREE NZ DRUM AND BASS DOWNLOAD

DIGITAL RE RELEASE ON WWW.NEWCLEARMUSIC.COM

So let me remember I believe this remix is over 2 years old.

This is a personal fave of mine because it was when I had really mastered basslines and was able to start writing tunes faster, which gave me more time to think about what I was doing.

It was the last of quite a creative string of tunes I did over the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007 which included “Past Lives” – Ivan NSU had contacted me on Myspace about a remix and I had agreed not realising he was actually in NZ, so I was pretty lax about it until I was quickly able to throw down a demo in a night. After months of dicking around.

It was cool, but I insisted I wanted to bring up the engineering. But I’d been really influenced by a recent D-Bridge gig whcih was of course full of minimal melodic tech and so I began to break down the melody, or more kind of fuse it, to give more room for the bass grooves to push through.

In fact I totally rewrote the bass so it dropped with a heavier more insistent roll, again, part of me fusing down the raw elements into a more forceful concept.

Also for some reason, I was able to avoid making a complete bollocks of the mastering, so aside from perhaps Positive Vibes and maybe one or two others, it’s one the better sounding tunes from that era.

This was an important tune for me because actually it was after this tune I decided to think more about the kinds of tunes I’m putting together, which really slowed down my output just until recently when I’ve been busy again.

Look see I don’t only write on my blog when I’m feeling messed up.

I was feeling pretty messed up earlier in the year, it was straight up John Kirwan business.

That’s when I started writing whatever the hell I liked on here.

Depressed, bro. It was shitty, it’s like chemical. Chemical imbalances from external stimuli, stimuli that suck, basically. If I see any stimuli I’m not down with . . . then I’m not into it.

Because I have got to get on with it. I can’t be sitting around buzzing out. I was just sitting there going, shit, I know what I have to do, but I just feel like behaving lumpishly instead.

That’s life as a living human lump. Life can be a drag, which however and moreover, eats ass, but then you get a rainbow up your silver lining and you’re good to go.

I got a lot of shit going on. My business affairs are all going pretty sweet so I’ve actually managed to start kicking out tunes again, I’ve busted out like 3 new drum’n bass tracks and they’re all going to be Soul Science numbers, all my straight up D’n B is gonna be Soul Science.

And I was excited. Doing my tunes, taking care of my business, it’s a pretty crucial time. Y’know I talked to my man Shane Hollands and I wanted to go off down what could of been the wrong path.

Down to John Kirwan’s house, face of mental illness in New Zealand.

There was a girl involved.

There was a Lasagna from the Bluebird cafe in Mt. Eden, and now there’s not.

There was a girl involved, then I left to get drunk.

That didn’t happen, that was just something I wrote. That was like, my poem.

But there was a girl involved, I wanted to put her on youtube. I want to do that shit, this is art, man.

I was going to put me stalking Camille on youtube also, but y’know.

Oh, you don’t? Well it’s only going to work as long as the feeling is there. You can’t just fudge it, that’s the art of the Reality Compound, it’s somewhat real.

I mean come on, am I to go after some chick and have it not work out and then not make it into art?

What about what she wants?

Oh I see. It’s all about you, I get it. I mean . . .

I wanted to go to her gig tomorrow. But I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. Well, actually I do.

I’ve almost got my shit together, I’m actually making money and music at THE SAME TIME.

Only for the last 3 days but still, pretty awesome. This is how I want my life to be. I make money because I can, I write tunes because I feel like it. No, because I have to!

I do!

Got several new bits I’m working on, I got this new tune “Cooler” which i’m pretty stoked about, it’s not massive or anything it’s just got a deep 80’s vibe which is down, like it’s still got a drum and bass feel, but it’s also got quite authentic 80’s vibes and beats, I think I managed to bring those vibes together nicely!

And there’s a new beat dungeon radio show recording, damn me and Ivan were getting dumb.

Crazy dumb stooopid . . . dicks basically.

We talk pretty much too loud aswell but y’know, that’s the way it is, this is the 21st century so I think you better be ready for a new and imperfect kind of superstar. Unprofessional but absolutely real.

Y’know, so I’m getting there. We had the gig for the Downbeat Syndrome at Lot 44, that was all good, that’s me jamming with Micah aka Stray Theories, he was killing it on the sax i must have said that.

And Mr. Shane Hollands was on the mic it was like . . . it was unruly but you could tell there was a bit of action on it and really we were just messing around, if we got serious on it, we could be pulling some shit.

It was kinda for me like . . . you get those stupid moments where you’re like . . . why in hell is this only happening now??? Don’t complain. Just get on with it.

Nice things are coming together.

I’d love to crash the party tomorrow and make some big statement but I have to be patient.

What’s the point? Where are you gonna go with it?

There’s no point any more in being half arsed about this, I would love to dive in head long and start waving my camera about and being absolute retard but thats not going to come up with anything sustainable.

It’s not going to be that worthwhile, and I’ll see that and want to go sit down again for 6 months, I can’t do that, I gotta pick up my camera and start rolling and never stop but if that’s gonna happen I gotta be prepared.

So motivational yall! I can do ittt!!! YESSSS!!!

- A-Sides @ Fu tonight just $15 on the door!!!! I’m on 12-1, A-Sides is on 2-4. Been grabbing lots of new tunes, ones I been feeling are “Tell Me” by Specific and “Aware” by Er.Ic

I am NEVER here no more, but I will be back to give my whole shit a makeover once I get off the work trip I’ve been on for the last 18 months.
It had to be, you don’t wanna be poor, it’s just pointless, I’d avoid it at all costs.
If you need to talk to me you HAVE to get in touch with me through my business Kurb Promotions, as I am mostly busy being yuppie fuck marketing guy.

I am not on Facebook because hot chicks always ask me “Do I know you?” when I try to add them. I’m fucking Romantech, sheesh.
I don’t have time for this. But I am on twitter because I’m over the timesuck. Better things to do, seriously.
You can follow me at http://www.twitter.com/mattNZ
If you are a muso or kiwi on there I’ll follow you back.
Got a new mix coming out soon called “Tough Love”.
There was also one in August if you missed it: “Gentleman Caller”
Romantech and Soul Science buddy Control tear it up on a sunny Auckland Day. Kicking it off laid back, they step it up with some two-step and garage, finally dropping the feel-good liquid sounds.
16/03/08 Edition:
Apologies for previous week’s missing recording (no playlist this time either, sorry)!

In other news, Soul Science Thursdays are no more! After a mammoth 20 month strecth well . . . I’ll just be straight up, we had such a fine night for the Snatch DJ comp – taken out by DJ Nutron – there really wasn’t a better opportunity to say . . . Foci, Thursdays, it’s been swell, a lot of great new young DJ’s have come up playing the Thursday night slots, a lot of good honest up for it bass heads have come into the scene – but its time to put a lid on that, and take a moment to freshen up.

I will be very suprised if a new weekly opportunity to kick back with beats and brews on a thursday doesn’t emerge for 2008.

Don’t forget to standby for announcements regarding this years Soul Science christmas party!

But I’m stil running big t’ings! Mainly doing gay shit like writing business blogs and work starfff BAARTT NZ’s top hardcore punk act The Bleeders release their new self titled album November 12 and I’m the special head of online promotion operations!

If you are interested in online promotion starf especially where it relates to promoting music and other creative enterprise you can hit my promo blog at a number of locations this probably being the best.

http://kurbpromotions.blogspot.com

I’ve got lots of magical secrets. Kind of like a my little pony unicorn that if you rub my butt it smells like strawberries. Maybe kind of.

Meantime I’m cranking out thousands of christian personal development DVDs for work which although means you might not actually see me other than those fucking chinese posters I’ve been putting everywhere – I’m looking for such endeavours to personally develop me into a meaningful relationship with a charming young filly of these likes going into the festive season:

Deep in my subconscious grows the seed that a black beamer will perfectly compliment my upward mobility with a warm hue of conspicuous and slightly ostentatious consumption. I’m sure Freud would say it probably has something to do with compensating for living with my mother, but he can think what he likes. He’s dead, meantime I’ll be rolling in the myspace “fanny magnet” come ‘08

Which is bound to be a voyage of self discovery in which I remember rolling in a sexy black ride has a novelty duration of happy satisfaction for about 10 days before the effect is diseminated by insurance costs and constant fear of the many dangers and threats to her shiny blackness – like a 17 year old with a key who’s just realised you had no intention of making it “official”.

Lets hope it works out. Otherwise at least I’ve still got my personality.

Man, I reckon “Signs” by Snoop/JT and the Neptunes is such a fat tune.

BUT that’s me. I’ve totally had that same thing happen with T-pain as with what happened with My Chemical Romance last year – of hating them so much I actually stop fighting and decide I’m actually REALLY into T-pain.
